Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, produced by the RSC in nearby Stratford this season, is a seesaw experience, swinging violently between opposites: young and old, light and dark, dreams and reality, life and death, poison and preservation, love and murder.
‘Love is a smoke made with a fume of sighs
Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers’ eyes
Being vexed, a sea nourished with lovers’ tears
What is it else? A madness most discreet,
A choking gall and a preserving sweet.’
For this project, our writers are each teamed with a visual artist. The pairs will work together on ideas springing directly and indirectly from the play. We expect a hugely entertaining and varied performance and exhibition, full of destruction and creation, humour and sadness, play and seriousness.
